I seek to enable the student to take an active role in choosing their courses
I try to make sure students understand not just what the curricular requirements are but why they are important and how they reflect the nature of a liberal arts education. I meet with them regularly and am available to them most days. In my role as advisor I seek to support my students and discuss their class choices while helping them plan for the future. I never tell them they have to take a class and at times this frustrates them as they seem to be looking for the answer. When that occurs I explain to them that they must “adopt the mantle of the expert” and make their own curricular decisions. Before I started advising I attended the Spring workshop for new faculty advisors in 2012 which was very helpful.
